LEGO® at Large

LEGOLAND® Billund Resort

Kids at Heart

While LEGOLAND® Billund Resort is not the first LEGOLAND® location we’ve created interactive exhibits for, it presented unique challenges that we were excited to tackle. The request, born from their desire to incorporate hands-on water interactives, was to design and fabricate water tables that cohesively fit into two existing galleries themed around different LEGO® sets. The Boss Display team, being kids at heart, were delighted to transform both the Legoredo and Arctic Explorer sets into their large-scale counterparts.

Hand pumps are mounted around the table encouraging visitors to fill the tipping buckets.

The rocky waterfall arch serves as finish line for the boat race.

Two, styled tipping buckets can be filled and send cascades of water onto the boats below.

Our Legoredo Adventure

The Legoredo exhibit required us to hand-sculpt canyons that reflect those found in the Wild West. To get the job done, we had to strike a difficult balance. On the one hand, it needed to be realistic and educational—teaching guests about water flow and mechanical advantage. On the other hand, it needed to be durable enough to withstand thousands of visitors interacting with it every single day. The resulting table not only seamlessly matches the surrounding rock structures but is also packed with interactive elements. Guests are encouraged to race boats down the waterway while others can cause trouble with interactives such as water jets, tipping buckets, and drop gates.

The lever-activated boat launch allows guests to line up their boats and send them sailing down the table all at the same time.

Several pockets around the hand rail provide ample space for visitors to build their boats.

The Lego bridge gates can be activated by pressing a dynomite themed box, closing the gates and impeding the boats pathways.

Arctic Explorers Brought to Life

Like for the Legoredo set, the Arctic Explorer project needed to be realistic—an icy river carved through frosty glaciers. Our fabricators experimented with many epoxy-resin coatings to find the one that could accommodate the customers' need for lasting interactive fun. Pieces from the set such as the Ice Saw and Crane, were recreated as large scale models and incorporated into the gallery, adding crucial points for hands-on engagement. Mounted graphics throughout the exhibit mimic those found in the traditional Arctic Explorers set.

A Rewarding Process

New components like the lever-activated water jets or the moving ice box and interactive crane provide ample opportunities for explorers of all ages to engage in trial and error learning while building fine motor skills. We are thrilled to see the finished product, two lego themed galleries, brought to life on an interactive scale—now entertaining and educating guests at the Legoland Billund Resort.

Users send jets of water through the air to spin the Lego themed targets.

Visitors rotate the interactive Archimedes screw to transport water up in order to fill the tipping bucket.

Features:

Legoredo Water Table

  • Boat Launch | Users can add boats to the four loading areas and pull back the gate handle to release the boats down the river for a race.

  • Squirt Guns | Aim the squirt guns at the boats to push them down the river.

  • Bison Pump and Tippy Bucket | Use the pump to fill up the tippy bucket and dump water on the river or an oncoming boat.

  • Water Jet | Push the knobbed handle in any direction to propel a boat with a jet of high-velocity water.

  • Dynamite Box and Bridge with Dam Gates | Push down the Dynamite Box handle to close the gates on the dam and redirect the boats to a different route.

  • Arch Waterfall | Boats will pass through a waterfall curtain underneath an arch on their way to the end of the table.

  • Water Mushroom | At the end of the table is an interactive switch that creates a mushroom-shaped sheet of water.

Arctic Explorer Water Table

  • Crane Lifting Ice Block | Rotate the handle on the crane to lift a block of ice and release a wave of dammed-up water.

  • Archimedes Screw and Tippy Bucket | Rotate the Archimedes screw to carry water into a tippy bucket. Once the tippy bucket is full, it will release a surge of water onto the table.

  • Ice Saw | Rotate the handle to spin a saw blade and watch through the clear glass as it splashes and sprays water.

  • Squirt Guns and Target Gallery | Aim and shoot a stream of water at many arctic-themed features which will spin when hit.

  • Fogging Mushroom | This water interaction creates a sheet of water that traps and holds fog. Burst the sheet of water, and watch as the fog escapes.

  • Floating Icebergs | Navigate boats through this section of floating icebergs which move when hit.

  • Fishing Pond | Go catch some arctic Lego fish out of the bottom of a glacial pond with a magnetic fishing pole.

  • Boat Lock | Bring boats up or down the table by opening and closing the doors.
